We had always wanted to charter a bare-boat cat in BVI. But didn't have any experience with a charter company. We spent several months reading reviews and narrowing down the choices. One of our considerations was not wanting to go with the huge companies. We really wanted to get better service and hopefully better equipment that seemed like was common with the big guys. So after narrowing down the choices, we then focused on the boats that were available when we wanted to go, and what condition they were in. After working through that process, we decided on BVI Yacht Charters. We are glad we did. We had arranged to sleep on the boat the night before our charter started. For our group of six, it was cheaper and easier to do this than get a couple rooms in town. It also allowed us to settle in, get unpacked and be ready to hoist sails quickly the next day. BVI Yacht Charters also allows you to do most of the checkup brief online prior to arriving. The $12 is well worth it and saves about an hour of your time. More importantly, it gets you off the dock earlier than anyone else. Highly recommended. It also gives you a lot of good information to plan your trip around, so even without the headstart, I would do it. Their base is kind of an out of the way place. And you get driven there through a little industrial park. It seems a little sketchy at first. But they had a guard on duty at night, so we felt safe. It is also walking distance to the supermarket, so we were able to load up on supplies that evening. We actually arrived after they were closed, so I was worried we wouldn't have a place to stay or a way to reach them. But they had left our boat unlocked and detailed instructions for us. They had already filled the water and had the a/c running, so were able to clean up and relax with no issues. The next morning we checked in with the office, grabbed snorkel gear (included) a couple floats and did our safety briefing. As discussed, with the pre-work done, it only took about 15 mins. We then walked the boat with their check out guy and were on our way. All paperwork was ready and all boat equipment, in particular safety stuff was good to go. Everything went smoothly. We chartered for 10 days and sailed throughout the BVI. The boat handled wonderfully and was in very good shape for a charter. The only hiccup was the a/c stopped working on the last night, so it got a little toasty. I was worried it was something we broke, but it turned out to be a clogged cooling water intake. During the trip we docked for one night. Apparently there were nails sticking out from the dock and we ended up damaging the gelcoat. We didn't notice it until we got back to the dock and were really worried about the cost to repair it. It would have been pretty easy for them to simply charge us the $1,000 deductible and I don't know if we could have argued it. We needed to head to the airport and didn't have the experience to know what the repair might cost there. But they were gracious and we negotiated a much lower cost and settled up right then. This reason alone would be enough for me to come back. They are honest hard working people on the staff and seem to genuinely care that everything was right and that we had a good time. I would highly recommend them and we have booked a trip to go back the summer of 2017.
